Where to look

Spring shad season here! The Cape Fear and Tar rivers offer some of the best American shad fishing in the state.

• On the Cape Fear River, target the spring run near the locks and dams at Tarheel, Elizabethtown, and Riegelwood.
• Along the Tar River, try Battle Park in Rocky Mount or Bell’s Bridge north of Tarboro, both are great for boat and bank anglers.

Helpful pointers

• Look for current seams caused by rocks, bends in the river, or other structures.
• Small spoons and jigs in attention getting colors are your friend: gold, silver, pink chartreuse, etc.
• Add weight above your lures for better casting distance and to fish a little deeper.
