What to Do When the Bites Are Slow
Q: Fish are around, but no bites…what now?
A: Slow bites usually mean conditions or presentation need adjusting – not that the fish aren’t there.
- Change your bait
- Use smaller, fresher bait
- Switch scent (e.g. Squid – sardine - shrimp)
- Use softer baits when fish are cautious
- Adjust your leader & hooks
- Shorten your leader for a more natural presentation
- Downsize hooks if fish are shy
- Try a lighter sinker so the bait moves more naturally
- Move, Don’t Wait
- Shift left or right – even 15 to 20 feet helps
- Look for holes, currents, color lines
- Fish where the water is moving, not still
- Match the Conditions
- Bright sun – fish deeper or closer to structure
- Dirty water – Stronger-smelling baits
- Fish where the water is moving, not still
- Slow Down
- Give your bait time
- Avoid constant casting
- Let the fish commit
